How To Learn Sabaq

Introduction

The Quraan is the religious text of Islam and believed by Muslims to have been a revelation from Allah ﷻ. Due to this many Muslims are taught to start reading the Quraan at a very young age. Those children that start being able to read the Quraan well in Arabic and have the passion of wanting to memorize it are put into a program for memorizing it either during full time school or in the evenings. All students are assigned a small lesson daily that goes from ½ page for new students to up to 3 pages a day for the older and more experienced ones.

Note: This instruction is used for those who can understand how to read the Quraan and who are currently enrolled in a memorization program. Words that will be used are:

  • Naazirah, meaning looking inside and reading.
  • Sabaq, meaning new lesson.
  • Ayah, meaning verse or sentence of the Quraan.
Instructions

Step 1: Open your Sabaq of the day in your Quraan and mark exactly where the starting and ending point of your sabaq are. (Below is the 3rd page of the Quraan and ½ of the page is marked to memorize).

Step 2: Do Naazirah of your entire Sabaq of the day 10 times from start to finish. Make sure to be reading loudly, clearly, and as fluently as possible. Doing Naazirah 10 times will help make reading easier, more fluent, and will also allow the student to have parts of it already somewhat memorized due to the repetition.

Step 3: Mark of a small portion of the Sabaq in your mind (Don’t physically mark anything), limiting it to 1 small ayah or ½ of a big ayah. Start repeating this small portion until reading without looking is possible. (Below is the first full small Ayah highlighted).

Step 4: Mark another small portion of the Sabaq, limiting it to 1 small ayah or ½ of a big ayah. Start repeating this small portion until reading without looking is possible. (Below is a big ayah cut into half).

Step 5: Repeat both memorized portions until reading without looking for both is possible.

Step 6: Mark another small portion of the sabaq, limiting it to 1 small ayah or ½ of a big ayah. Start repeating this small portion until reading without looking is possible.

Step 7: Repeat all memorized portions until reading without looking is possible for all portions.

Step 8: Repeat steps 6 and 7 until full Sabaq is memorized.
